语法小知识点：whether和if的区别

一、引导句子种类不同

1、if——只能引导主语从句和宾语从句

2、whether——四个从句都可以引导，但从句中有or not 必须用whether引导。

Whether they can finish the work on time is a problem.

=It is still a problem if/whether they can finish the work on time.

他们能不能按时完成工作还是个问题。

二、结构不同

1、if 引导的宾语从句只能使用形式主语结构，不能直接放到主语的位置。

2、同位语从句和表语从句不能用if引导，只能用whether。

I have no idea whether he is from America.

我不知道他是否来自美国

My problem  is whether he is from America.

三、用法不同

1、及物动词后的宾语从句whether、if都可以引导。介词后边的宾语从句必须用whether, 不能用if。

We talk about whether the answer is correct.

我们在讨论答案是否正确。

2、与不定式连用时只能用whether 不能用if。

I cannot decide whether to stay.

我还没决定是否留下来。
